Executive summary. India's automotive industry is projected to expand from USD 337.6 billion in 2025 to USD 576.7 billion by 2035, a 5.5% CAGR over the forecast period. That growth rate is respectable but not itself remarkable — several established automotive markets are growing faster. What makes India strategically consequential is the composition of the growth: a simultaneous shift in segment mix (toward SUVs and premium), powertrain mix (rapid two-wheeler and three-wheeler electrification), and end-market mix (rising export share to Africa, ASEAN, and Middle East) that collectively reshape the strategic playbook for OEMs, tier-1 suppliers, and infrastructure investors.
The headline number understates the strategic shift
India moved past Japan to become the world's third-largest automotive market by volume in 2023 and has held that position since. But volume rank tells only part of the story. The Indian automotive industry is undergoing three concurrent transitions, each of which independently would reshape the market — and their compounding is producing a fundamentally different industry structure than existed even five years ago.
First, segment mix is shifting rapidly toward SUVs and premium vehicles. In 2018, hatchbacks accounted for over 45% of passenger vehicle sales; by 2025, SUV and premium segments have grown to represent over 50%. The margin implications are substantial — SUV per-unit margins are meaningfully higher than hatchback margins, which changes the industry's aggregate profitability profile.
Second, the powertrain transition is happening faster than most global observers appreciate, but concentrated in specific segments. Passenger vehicle EV adoption remains modest (under 5% of new sales in 2025), but two-wheeler and three-wheeler electrification is accelerating rapidly — three-wheeler EV share has crossed 60% in several state markets, driven by TCO advantages in commercial use and supportive state policy.
Third, India is transitioning from a domestically-focused market to a meaningful export platform. Vehicle and component exports crossed USD 20 billion in FY24 and are growing at approximately 15% CAGR. The receiving markets — Africa, ASEAN, Middle East, Latin America — are structural rather than cyclical, and export share is projected to reach 25% of total industry revenue by 2035.
Segment analysis
Passenger vehicles: premiumization is the primary revenue driver
Passenger vehicle unit volume is projected to grow at 4-6% CAGR through 2035, but revenue is projected to grow substantially faster at 8-10% CAGR — the difference is entirely mix. SUV share is projected to reach 65% of PV sales by 2035, and premium-segment share (vehicles above INR 15 lakhs) is projected to grow from approximately 12% to over 25% of total volume. Both segments carry substantially higher per-unit margins.
The winners in this segment will be OEMs that have positioned their model lineups toward the premium/SUV mix ahead of the transition. Maruti Suzuki, historically the volume leader through hatchback dominance, has been repositioning aggressively but faces margin compression during the transition. Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota-Kirloskar are structurally well-positioned. Mahindra and Tata Motors have been the surprise share gainers in SUV categories.
Commercial vehicles: the export-driven segment
Commercial vehicles show the most pronounced export shift. Indian CV exports are increasingly competitive in African and Middle Eastern markets where price-performance matters more than premium brand positioning. Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors' CV business have both grown export share meaningfully, with Ashok Leyland targeting 30% export share by 2028. The economics are meaningful: export margins are typically higher than domestic due to lower price competition.
Two-wheelers and three-wheelers: the electrification story
Two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments together represent the majority of Indian automotive unit volume and are also the fastest-electrifying. The electric two-wheeler market has grown from under 100,000 units in FY21 to over 900,000 units in FY25. Growth is driven by favorable TCO (particularly with rising fuel prices), improving product availability, and state-level subsidies. Bajaj Auto, TVS Motors, Ola Electric, and Ather Energy are the primary competitors, with the market rapidly consolidating.
Three-wheeler electrification is even further along — several state commercial fleets have essentially fully electrified. This is a substantial revenue category despite its low profile in international coverage; approximately 45% of the world's three-wheeler production is Indian.
Regional and export dynamics
Within India, automotive industry activity remains concentrated in five states — Tamil Nadu (Chennai cluster), Karnataka (Bangalore), Maharashtra (Pune-Aurangabad), Gujarat (Halol-Sanand), and Haryana (Gurugram-Manesar). Together these states account for over 75% of production. New investment in Southern and Western states is increasing the geographic concentration further.
Export markets are diversifying. Historical export dependence on Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal has evolved into meaningful volume in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Indonesia, Philippines, Mexico, and increasingly Latin America. Each of these markets carries distinct regulatory and product-specification requirements, which favors OEMs and tier-1s that have invested in flexible manufacturing capability.
Structural challenges
The growth trajectory carries several real risks. Semiconductor supply security remains a structural vulnerability — India has essentially no domestic semiconductor manufacturing at automotive-grade specifications, and the industry remains dependent on East Asian supply chains. Government initiatives (India Semiconductor Mission) are underway but production at scale is still years away.
The transition to EVs across passenger vehicles will require material battery-manufacturing capacity that does not yet exist domestically. Charging infrastructure remains uneven — dense in Tier 1 metros, sparse in Tier 2 and beyond. Rare earth material sourcing for motors remains dependent on non-Indian supply chains.
Labor cost advantages are real but eroding. India's wage advantage versus China has narrowed as Chinese production shifts inland and Indian manufacturing wages rise. The advantage remains substantial against Western Europe and North America but is not the multiplier it was a decade ago.
Implications for buyers
Global OEMs evaluating India strategy: The market is now large enough that a passive export-focused presence is no longer sufficient. Domestic manufacturing capability and premium-segment product positioning are both required to capture value from the market's shift toward higher-margin categories.
Tier-1 suppliers: The premiumization of the Indian market is opening opportunities in components historically limited to European and Japanese OEM supply chains — ADAS sensors, premium interior components, high-voltage battery systems. Indian tier-1 suppliers that can meet global quality standards are increasingly winning global contracts, not just Indian ones.
PE and infrastructure investors: Charging infrastructure, battery manufacturing, and vehicle logistics represent categories with substantially higher forward growth than the vehicle segments themselves. These are also less crowded competitively than direct vehicle-segment investment.
Corporate strategy teams in adjacent sectors: Automotive-adjacent categories (auto finance, insurance, aftermarket parts, logistics) are compounding at 10-15% CAGR in India — faster than the vehicle categories themselves — as the underlying vehicle parc expands and shifts to premium.
